Duty Free & Tax Free Savings & The EU ... |
|
|
|
|
|
For passengers able to shop tax free it's as if the 17.5% Value Added Tax has not been added.
For passengers able to shop for duty free, they are able to make a range of additional savings.
Do note that it may be required that tax has to be paid on items when flying into the final destination outside the EU. This does not apply to goods purchased from certain stores like newsagents, bookshops, pharmacies or for goods where duty has already been paid.

If you are travelling to Gibraltar or other Channel Islands, you can shop using duty free allowances, even though the Countries are part of the EU. This is because they are viewed as outside the Community Customs territory for this purpose.
When shopping in the departures area, all passengers will need to show their boarding card each time they go to make a purchase.
If you know you want to do some shopping but are not sure what you want why not have a browse round the World Duty Free website when at home so you can see the full range of cosmetics, fashions, accessories, eletricals, tobacco, alcohol and perfumes. For those passengers travelling from an EU Country, into the UK the following goods can be bought without incurring any additional customs duty:
- 250g of tobacco, or 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars
- 2 Litres of sparkling, still table, or fortified wine, or other liqueurs stronger than 22% up to 1 Litre
- 50g of perfume and 250ml of toilet water
- Other goods including souvenirs up to the value of £145
- Goods obtained duty and tax paid in the EU are unlimited
It's very important that when coming back into the UK carrying either alcohol or tobacco products that you carry the goods that you have bought, and that you aren't carrying other persons' goods - both off the plane and through Customs. These goods must have been bought solely for your own personal use - either your own consumption or as gifts.
Goods brought into the UK for either payment or resale will be considered as for a commercial purpose.
If there's any reason for Customs to suspect that these goods are being brought into the UK for commercial use, a Customs Officer will need you to answer a number of detailed questions.
For example, you might be asked about the quantity and type of goods, why they have been bought, how much was paid, and how often you travel. The Customs Officer will also consider whether the excess goods have been concealed, or whether they have been visibly displayed.
Customs will suspect if the following quantities are being imported:
- 110 Litres of beer
- 90 Litres of wine
- 10 Litres of spirits
- 20 Litres of fortified wine (i.e. port or sherry)
- 3,200 cigarettes
- 200 cigars
- 400 cigarillos
- 3kg tobacco
If it's decided that the goods have been brought into the UK for a commercial use then they may be seized. The same will happen if the alcohol or tobacco goods are caught being sold. Customs consider this a serious offence that can result in up to seven years in prison.
Most Countries have their own laws on how much tobacco and alcohol you may have in your possession. Below are some EU Countries that have their own regulations for cigarette and tobacco products. Other Countries can request that you carry documents covering the goods. Therefore, should you be wanting to bring larger amounts of alcoholic or tobacco goods in and out of another Country do check with their Authorities first. |
