Humberside Airport began life as an RAF base known as Kirmington from 1941 to 1945.

The airport was used as farmland from 1945 until the airfield was put back into use for small airlines in 1960.

In 1969 the airfield was bought by the council and plans were started to revamp the site into a civil passenger airport.

The first passenger terminal was opened to the public in 1974 and became known as Kirmington airport.

When the County of Humberside was formed later in 1974, the airport was renamed to Humberside Airport, and the first scheduled flight took off in 1975.

In 1983 a new restaurant was added to the terminal and in 1987, the airport was turned into a private limited company.

Following from this, extensive developments took place and the new airport was opened in 1992.

In 1996, further changes were made to the passenger terminal and in 1999, the airport changed hands and Manchester Airport plc took control of its shares.

In September 2002, 57,623 passengers using the airport and holiday flight passengers were up a massive 23%.
