| When travelling with your mobile phone first contact your Network provider: |
|
| |
- Arrange for your mobile phone on holiday to be enabled for 'International roaming', which can take up to 14 days.
- Ask if your handset will work abroad - in the US for example, only tri-band handsets will work.
- How much will International roaming calls cost you? Do check, and double check just before you fly as the charges could have gone up.
- Ask what deals are available when taking your mobile phone abroad and see if you can change tariffs to one that's better suited for your International travel.

| If you are planning on using your mobile phone abroad a lot then contact your Network Provider about a tariff offering cheaper calls for a monthly fee. Also check how long you will need to be on the contract for and any penalties if you need to change again. |

| If you can't or don't want to change tariffs find out about using an alternative SIM card that allows you to make International calls. These can be bought at International airports along with some UK retailers. Do look to see if the SIM card carries an expiry date just in case it's before you travel, if you've purchased far in advance. |

You've landed so what do you need to do to make your phone work? Well, nothing. Just turn it on. Your phone will then find the local phone transmitter that your Network provider will route all your calls through.
Oddly however, your phone will still think you're in the UK. And it's this reason overseas calls, when travelling with your mobile phone, cost so much. For instance, when in France you call a UK friend who is also in France. Your call gets routed back to the UK, then back to France to your friend. That's around 1,800 miles! And, your friend will be charged for taking the call so both of you be warned. |

| Be on the safe side and put the following numbers into your mobile phone on holiday. |

- Telephone number of your Hotel / Tour Operator
- Telephone number of the nearest British Embassy to where you are going to be staying
- Your travel insurance provider's contact numbers

Just in case the worst happens and you lose your mobile phone, or it gets stolen, keep a separate note of your mobile's IMEI/serial number, the telephone number of your phone and the number of your Network provider's customer services dept. and any other unofficial information your Network provider needs to confirm you are the account holder, like a pin number or password. But don't store it with your mobile phone or you'll lose both!
Then you can call your Network provider straight away to block or cancel your mobile phone or SIM card. |

Travel insurance policies don't normally include cover for mobile phones on holiday. If you require cover you will need to arrange this with your insurance company.
